General Reinsurance Africa Ltd (a subsidiary of General Reinsurance AG) currently has an excellent opportunity for an Underwriter in Life/Health based in our Cape Town office.

Your Role:

A challenging opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills and a desire to succeed, to join a re-insurer with a significant global presence as Underwriter. The work will include underwriting and marketing our services to clients as well as some travel in the region. You will be required to perform underwriting assessments, become familiar with all relevant aspects of Gen Re’s Life/Health International business, provide training, design and deliver presentations and undertake research projects in conjunction with other departments within the Life/Health globally.

The position of Underwriter includes a broad range of tasks, including:

  • Providing client support and advice to create relationships and maintain a diverse database of contacts
  • Evaluating life insurance products in relation to best risk management practices
  • Assimilating of a variety of information pieces and the ability to distil, synopsise, conclude and communicate a well thought through decision, bearing in mind the variety of company product rules and Gen Re governance.
  • Delivering of presentations and training measures for clients
  • Marketing activities, including giving presentations at conferences and writing articles
  • Participating in international projects


  • South African product knowledge – Life, disability and health insurance
  • Medical qualifications would be advantageous
  • Significant underwriting experience
  • Previous education and training experience within the life insurance industry
  • Ability to provide underwriting assessments on a range of life insurance products
  • Ability to provide underwriting assessments on a range of life insurance products
  • Capacity to work effectively in a team environment
  • High degree of energy and creativity
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Solid software skills
  • Fluent English
