Hepatitis is a diffuse inflammation of the liver. It can take an acute or a chronic course. Acute hepatitis patients usually recover without sequelae whereas chronic hepatitis can lead to serious complications and progress to fibrosis and cirrhosis of the liver. Five different virus types A, B, C, D and E exist, but for underwriting, hepatitis B – possibly with co-infection of hepatitis D – and hepatitis C are the most relevant.
Please read in this edition of Underwriting Focus about hepatitis B and C incidence, course of infection, therapy options, prognosis and Insurance Medicine considerations. Additionally, we address the changes in the hepatitis chapter in Gen Re’s underwriting manual CLUE and include a general article on the interpretation of liver function tests. Hepatitis case studies round off the picture to prepare you for future underwriting cases.
