According to the 2013 Gen Re Critical Illness Market Survey, the average number of Critical Illness benefit eligibility triggers offered at that time was 13. Despite this, a number of insurers are now offering between 40 and 50. As such, we felt it imperative to ask this same question when interviewing agents for Critical Illness Producer Perspectives.

None of the producers surveyed suggested that having more benefit eligibility triggers than the next carrier was of any value whatsoever. Surprisingly, most seemed to indicate that limiting the number of triggers available helped the sales process rather than hindered it. Even the two producers who advocated for more triggers limited that number to 30 or less.
