The last few decades have seen a rapid increase in medical advancements. This progress has led to earlier diagnoses, better treatment outcomes and higher survival rates. As medicine continues to develop at such a speed, we need to be aware of the consequences this has for Life/Health underwriting.
In this edition of Underwriting Focus, we highlight a few of the innovative medical trends that require the insurance industry’s response. New cardiovascular imaging techniques improve detection of cardiac function and pathology. Chronic myeloid leukaemia has changed from being fatal to a chronic disease. Advances in orthopaedic surgery, pain control and implants have resulted in major benefits for patients. A case study on medical advances in rheumatoid arthritis rounds off the picture.
Two additional insurance-focused articles discuss how medical progress can be transferred to underwriting guidelines, and we analyse the influence of innovations on efficient operative underwriting. It is likely that in the next hundred years we will see as many medical changes as in the last hundred years. Let’s be prepared for this in underwriting.
