General Reinsurance, London Branch (a subsidiary of General Reinsurance AG) is offering a unique opportunity for a European Life Underwriter to work in our London Life/Health Insurance Department. Whilst under the remit of Gen Re’s CUSAC Segment (Canada, UK & Ireland, Africa, Australia and The Caribbean), this exciting role will be based in one of our European Offices in Paris, Madrid, Cologne, Vienna or Milan. Ideally, candidates should be able to commute into the local office when required and be prepared to travel and work flexible hours where appropriate.

Main purpose of job

As a key member of the UK and Ireland underwriting team, the successful candidate will be expected to administer, implement and promote all aspects of Gen Re underwriting philosophy practice for UK and Ireland and to ensure that high levels of service are met and maintained.

Although the role predominantly concentrates on the day to day technical underwriting, additional work is often rotated amongst the team. The successful candidate can therefore also expect to gain a valuable insight into other areas of the business.

Gen Re has been writing business in the UK and Ireland since 1983 and provides reinsurance solutions for mortality business, critical illness, income protection, annuities and long-term care. As experts in risk management, we work closely with our clients to develop tailored solutions to meet their business goals by:

Key responsibilities

Technical underwriting of life and health business

This will include:

  • Understanding and applying Gen Re underwriting philosophy, rules and guidelines
  • Working within agreed authority limits
  • Providing technical underwriting advice to Gen Re clients on a daily basis
  • Proficiency in understanding client contracts and policy terms and conditions
  • Ensuring clear, concise and accurate documentation (internal and external)
  • Liaising with Gen Re Consulting Medical Officers
  • Developing and maintaining strong client relationships

Supporting the wider Gen Re team

This will include:

  • Participating in Gen Re medical underwriting training
  • Participating in Gen Re audit program
  • Liaising actively with other Gen Re business segments
  • Liaising actively with the International Research and Development team by undertaking focused research
  • Attending industry seminars, training and events

  • Ensure teamwork within client teams, branch and within any other cross branch, cross segment, or project team

  • Confidence with Word and Excel are essential for the role
  • Life, Critical Illness, and Income Protection underwriting authorities
